Well, the STORY is just beautiful.  I’d have to say that out of all of the movies out there James Cameron’s AVATAR is the most earth-loving, Gaia-centric story that reminds us to revere Mother Earth…when you look PAST the CGI and ALIEN-ification of Indigenous people, which is also done for marketability to exercise animation tech to the max.  James Cameron draws heavily from Native American folklore and mythology, restoring reverence to the rain forest.  Only it wouldn’t be as escapist, and slightly heavy-handed, if Cameron exposed pharmaceutical companies killing trees for medicines to be sold to test populations, greed-hungry diamond/gold miners, oil drillers exploiting our VERY own rain forests for profit here on earth.

It’s easier on the broader movie-going consciousness to root for an alien nation to survive the greedy hands of the ‘insane human’ than it is to really be able to get back to the 80s, when the issue of depleting rain forests had a little more urgency on the agenda.  The film begins with wheelchair-bound former marine, Jake Sully, played by Sam Worthington, arriving light years away from an earth already destroyed by an energy crisis, bypassing our imminent self-destruction.

Cameron offers an escapist reality, but the film stays with you, wishing for a stronger connection with this planet.  Maybe as movie-goers walk out of the theater, a more organic awakening will occur in the hearts of man.  It’s an ambitious desire to manipulate the audience into decreasing their carbon footprint, but if we are to really reconsider the impact of the oil industry, the mining industry, the energy industry on this planet, it will be a bipartisan responsibility, and not just tossed to the side of those “tree-hugging bleeding hearts.”

I think, for the first time, Cameron does a 180 with technology to deify Nature with this story.  He has consistently repeated the same message in the “Terminator” franchise, touting Einstein’s maxim that “technology has surpassed our humanity.”  But this time, instead of having evolved artificially intelligent computers smack human hands into submission, drawing from Rospo Pallenberg’s “The Emerald Forest” as a template (with greed-hungry miners instead of dam-builders, all for the sake of energy), Cameron disguises the heavy handling of environmental protectionism with CGI and ‘otherness.’  I think this movie contributes to the awakening of responsibility as wards of this planet.  Hands down.

Cameron also addresses the power of the subconscious and its connection to our ‘shells,’ the soul, and a spirituality fortified and ignited with nothing short of…music.

Plus…the alien-chick, Neytiri, is pretty mezmerizing to watch.    She one haaaahhht faerie princess warrior of power.

It is a string arrangement with a warmth that makes one draw breath.

Michel Colombier’s arrangement just weeps with a life of experience.  Chris Botti’s lone muted trumpet over the bass and sparing strings says the same line of  phrasing with slight variation, but renewed longing and expression.  Lucia Micarelli’s poetic responses are the perfect compliment.

Visually, this combination produces the cold, slow-moving underwater dance sequence of silhouettes, like in the opening credits to a Bond movie…or the lone travels of Bruce Banner at the closing credits to “the Incredible Hulk” TV show…haunting, beautiful, stunning and solitary.

Michel Columbier‘s genius is rightly paid tribute by the mastery of Chris Botti and Lucia Micarelli, translated to another spiritually sensual rendition of Emmanuel.

If there can be scaffolding to the emotional effect of a song, Joe Harnell’s “The Lonely Man,” the theme song to ”The Incredible Hulk,” which ran from 1977 to 1982, sounds architecturally influenced by Columbier’s Emmanuel, written in 1971, resulting in a stark, pared down but similar design in its open, spacious construction.
